Online interviews are part of today’s world of hybrid working but that doesn’t mean they should feel any less professional than in-person meetings. Whether you’re changing industries, returning to work, or chasing your next dream role, how you show up virtually still counts.
Here’s how to ensure you shine through the screen:
1. Set the Stage for Success
It seems obvious but please test your tech before the interview! Check your camera, audio, and the platform being used. Avoid last-minute panics by doing a dry run and don’t forget your background: opt for a clean, neutral setting that keeps the focus on you.
2. Dress the Part
Treat the interview like you would an in-person meeting. Present yourself with polish and confidence from head to toe. (Yes, even your shoes. You’ll feel more professional, even if they don’t make it on camera!).
3. Do Your Homework
Take the time to research each prospective employer. Understand their product or service, mission, recent projects, culture and values. Talk about what excites you about their work as this shows genuine interest.
4. Bring the Energy
Body language and micro expressions matter on the screen so maintain eye contact, smile and let your enthusiasm shine through. Express your passion for the role, the team, and the organisation. Positivity is contagious, even on screen.
5. Back Yourself
Confidence is key. You’ve earned the interview, now own your story. Speak clearly about your strengths, your value, and why you’re the right fit. Believe in what you bring to the table.
Preparation makes all the difference. Show up like the job is already yours and you just might land it!
